En 1933, dans : « Die zentralen Orte in Süddeutschland », Walter Christaller (1893-1969) ne parle pas de « modèle » mais de « System » représenté dans une « Figur ». Ce n’est qu’en 1965 qu’on trouve dans un de ses articles traduit en anglais : « The advantages of a space-economical theory for the practice of regional planning» un sous-titre intitulé « The central place model ».
